Kraken sea Saw

Kraken Sea Saw is an interactive art installation funded by Great Lakes Experimental Arts Inc. for Lakes of Fire 2016. The installation features a nautical themed seesaw, with interactive tilt-sensor LED lights reflected installed inside an "infinity mirror".

Concept Development

The concept and development of this project was done in partnership with Patchy Projects, and a total of eight people collaborated to build the Sea Saw. The picture below is the team's first conceptual drawing of the Sea Saw. The team then developed the prototype for the reactive LEDs, the frame of the Sea Saw, and the environmental decorations.

Final Installation

The Sea Saw was installed in June 2016 for Lakes of Fire, a festival in Michigan. During the day, the Seasaw functions normally, but excels at night, or in a dark room, when the reactive LED lights are visible. An infinity mirror board lays across the length of the Seasaw, and when it tilts, the seemingly      gravity-reactive LEDS that line the mirror trickle down to the lower end.

Date of Project: June 2016

My role:  I was responsible for building the infinity mirror, including installing the wiring of the lights and power source. Other responsibilities include setting up the rest of the Sea Saw and helping assign roles to every teammate. I was also partly responsible for writing the grant proposal that funded this project.

Programs and skills used:

  • Worked with a team of eight people to build a functioning interactive installation.
  • Used power tools, precise measuring skills, and preemptive planning to build an effective and stable piece.

Solution: Create an interactive installation for festival-goers to enjoy, and explore the ideas of adding interactive technologies to a playground piece not usually with those elements.
